Our present " Cooperativa Agrícola i Caixa Agraria de la Selva del Camp was founded in 1900 under the name of "Asociación Agricola de La Selva del Camp". This first asociation was formed by farmers, small landowners and labourers who, inspired by the working-class movement that, starting in the middle of the 19th century, had developed in industrial urban areas, gathered together to find a way to face the effects of the agrarian crisis at the end of the century.
This association was first locally known in the village as "Societat dels Pagesos" This was a popular denomination to distinguish it from"l´Agricola", created in 1904 and founded in 1906 as "Sindicat Agricola de la Selva del Camp".
The latter asociation was mainly formed by the wealthiest landowners in the village. Both asociations, and the oldest in particular, had a social rather than economic function and they finally merged in 1920.
L´Agricola took more of an active position, providing loans to its members and playing an outstanding role in the introduction of fertilisers and phytosanitary products for use in the agricultural practices of the period. The early nineteenth century agricultural societies and syndicates made posible the modernisation and the introduction of technology in agriculture and permitted the acces of previous labourers ans small landowners to larger and more profitable lands.
In 1916 yet another asociation was constituted: the "Sindicat de Sant Andreu". This third institution was promoted by the church in order to group small and medium-size farmers.Such asociation, unlike the two others, had an active role in the production process and acted firmly in the transformation and commercialisation of crops. It was also the first to purchase a hydraulic press, which was available for the use of all its associates. The two secondary crops, olives and grapes were processed there.Hazelnut has been the most cultivated product in the village since the second half of the 19th century.

The Spanish war first and then the dictatorship of General Franco put an end to the rich and plural history of the agricultural Catalan co-op movement. Between 1936 and 1939 in our village, there was only one agricultural syndicate, which was in charge of commercialising the crops and of providing the basic products for the subsistence of the local population. After the war, both agricultural syndicates were obliged to merge and to folow Franco´s trade union structures. In 1946 the ancient "sindicat Agricola" was renamed "Cooperativa Agricola de La Selva del Camp", and a new period of expansion was initiated in the late 50s, when the co-operative became increasingly active in the development of agricultural activities and in the local economy

The construction in 1959 and subsequent running by the co-operative of a wine cellar for the processing and comercialisation of the wine coming from its associates vineyards meant a turning point for the size of its business. In the sixties, the cellar and wine accounted for the main part of its activity but in the sixties it started to devote itself to the most important and emblematic product in the village: hazelnuts. The co-operative diversified its services, enlarged, improved and equipped its building with new technology, in order to adequate them to the needs of its associates and to adapt them to the new requirements of crop-harvesting, cleaning, storing, transformation and commercialisation of hazelnuts.
After having undergone an important social and financial crisis in th 80s, the cooperative has gone through a process of re.foundation and improvement whch has given in international prestige as a company specialised in the industrial processing of hazelnuts and in the production of virgin olive oil.
Our "AGRICOLA I CAIXA AGRARIA I SECCIO DE CREDIT DE LA SELVA DEL CAMP-COSELVA, SCCL" is a point of reference in the agricultural co-op movement, today. COSELVA favours the use of the most advanced technologies to continue offering, in the future, products of the highest quality.
